Desiree Thompson has loved animals from the time she was able to be next to one. Her mother said she has been telling her since she was five years old that she would become a veterinarian. She never wavered from this during her youth, never second guessed her future plans, she always knew she was destined to work with animals. After high school Desiree attended Butler Community College where she received her associate’s in animal science for Pre-Veterinarian. She then went on to K-State where she worked on obtaining her bachelor’s degree. She started working at Pet Smart while attending school in Manhattan to gain experience with animals. She did not know at the time that she would find her place in the animal industry outside of what she had prepared herself for, but she did just that. After attending the PetSmart grooming academy and obtaining her certificate, she went from bathing to grooming and fell in love. Though close to completing her bachelor’s she made her decision only five credit hours short to come back home. She began working at a nearby grooming facility shortly after in 2023.

After many unsuccessful attempts at retirement, Desiree’s grandmother finally decided it was time to close the doors at the local shop in Canton KS after 25 years. It had been Desiree’s long term goal since she began grooming to one day open her own shop. She didn’t know it would only be three short years after moving back home. We started breaking ground on renovations in January 2026 and finished just in time for the soft opening of “The Dog House Style and Stay”. Grand Opening on March 7th, 2026 was a success! Excitement filled the air as patrons and their furry friends entered the once Victorian Tea Room into the pet friendly Dog House.

It is with great anticipation that we look to the future of what the Dog House will become not only for Desiree and her family, but to all the local and surrounding areas of Canton KS. The Dog House is offering a variety of services from Nail Trims to Full Grooming Services, as well as Doggy Daycare and Overnight Boarding. With a lot of research and dedication to providing the absolute best possible pet care, the state inspection was passed with flying colors and is fully licensed and insured, and ready to accept reservations for all services. Unlike most boarding facilities, Desiree felt it was imperative to be on site when having overnight stays and with this in mind, a space was renovated for her and her family to stay all night so that no animal is left alone. She will be staying at the facility with all overnight guests.
